Who are we?
My name is Gabrielle Bonneville. I am a passionate yogi, a circus freak, a dreamer and an avid traveler. Born into a circus family to a Venezuelan mother and a Canadian father, I saw first hand the impact of circus in many realms of my life. Today, I am someone who wants to create a paradigm shift through conscious circus.
After a few years in the United Nations, I realized that there was a lack of dialogue about circus or yoga in the humanitarian field. There was no discussion of the impact of play in conflict resolution. Nothing relating yoga to peace. Nothing about the effects of yoga and play on trauma. I decided to start something on my own, a beautiful project that would legitimize circus and yoga on the field. So, along with my best friends, I started the Momentom Collective.
What is our vision and how will it impact the society?
Momentom’s non profit project called “Project CirQus’ delivers the benefits of yoga and circus arts to vulnerable and marginalized populations worldwide, using these mediums as tools to promote social inclusion and trauma alleviation. The project aims to cultivate useful life skills among vulnerable populations. With a specific focus on refugee camps, the collective developed a curriculum that combines yoga and circus arts tailored to deliver core educational and recreational values to refugee and/or internally displaced youth in post-conflict or state-of-emergency recovery. This project envisions legitimizing circus and yoga as viable sports for development.
By combining yoga and meditation with circus arts, the curriculum is able to address cognitive, physical, psychosocial and emotional development within one overarching framework. The teachings provide participants with the capacity to better navigate their thoughts, emotions and abilities, thus widening their opportunities with regard to employability skills, social reintegration and personal well being. Simultaneously, the curriculum provides a platform for individual and community empowerment to overcome post disaster conflict trauma.
What have we done so far?
Because finding funding can be a wee bit hard, we have signed up for the GoodFestival October edition in order to increase our exposure and collaborate with other innovators. Our intention is to gain experience in the field and find funding on our for-profit initiatives and bring circus and yoga to the humanitarian field.
Our intention is to collaborate with leaders in the humanitarian field or with companies dedicated to promoting alternative social endeavours .
So far, the Collective collaborated with the Nicaraguan Red Cross to implement social circus performances and workshops in rural communities through Nicaragua, providing free performances to youth in schools and community centres in the country. It was epic.
In 2017, we co-operated a project with Asylum Seekers in Mexico to get our crew into a refugee camp called Las 72. For a week, we provided free performances and workshops to the refugees, bringing smiles and love to everyone. We loved it, and are motivated to get into more refugees worldwide
What more do we need to achieve our vision?
Simply put. We need exposure. And to do so, we need to get ourselves to Switzlerland.
Thousands of people from across the world will be present at GoodFestival and could give us the exposure we need to establish a better presence worldwide.
Once funding is reached, we will fly the team Switzerland and showcase our project to the worlds largest festival for sustainable and innovative projects in the world- the Good Festival. We will demonstrate first hand the impact of yoga and circus on wellbeing by providing free yoga and acroyoga classes to all participants of the festival and members of the jury. At night, we will also provide impromptu jaw-dropping performances throughout the festival to get our crew known and to show you why circus skills are extraordinaire.
Momentom is a collective of yogis, acrobats and circus artists from all over the world, and from all walks of life. On the team, we have magicians, aerialists, Reiki healers, ballerinas, acrobats, artists and puppeteers.
Each of our people is unique and authentic in their own way. Elevating each other through collective work, we make the impossible possible and we provide a good lifestyle for street artists. Co-existing in the same space, our people can include new yoga teachers, street artists to cirque du soleil Performers. At Momentom colective, there is no class, there is no discrimination.
We share a collective vision to create a paradigm shift by empowering humanity. This we do by making our arts accessible to as many people as possible, especially the vulnerable, the traumatized, the hopeless. The collective agrees that the fusion of yoga (introspection) and circus (self-expression) can serve to elevate people to their optimal selves, and we want to share that with the world.
